Episode 5: What Should a Prophetic Word Do?

Episode 5: What Should a Prophetic Word Do?

Episode Description:

A prophetic word is hearing or receiving something from God for someone else and then communicating it to them. It is hearing God’s heart for them. We emphasize that a prophetic word should not replace hearing God for yourself but often confirms what God has already revealed to you. This episode unpacks 1 Corinthians 14:3 – that a prophetic word is strengthening, encouraging, and comforting. An important outcome from this is that it will bear good fruit. We briefly address what to do if we hear something negative for someone. As usual, Gary and Jane share personal examples.

Episode Notes:

1 Corinthians 14:3 says,

  • NIV: “But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.”
  • RSV: “he who prophesies speaks to men for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.”
  • The Message: “But when you proclaim his truth in everyday speech, you’re letting others in on the truth so that they can grow and be strong and experience his presence with you.”
  1. A prophetic word is encouraging.
  • A prophetic word encourages or exhorts.
  • It calls us up to be the person God created us to be. It can awaken potential.
  • It can encourage us to step into the things of God we haven’t encountered before.
  • It encourages us to rise to the challenge and embrace what is only possible in God.
  1. A prophetic word is strengthening.
  • A prophetic word can strengthen or edify.
  • It strengthens us through instruction and improvement.
  • God uses prophecy to shed light in all areas of our life and show us the way we are to go.
  1. A prophetic word is comforting.
  • A prophetic word can bring comfort and consolation. Comfort means relief in affliction.
  • Prophecy reassures us that God sees our pain, distress, anger, etc and in fact, He feels it too.
  • A prophetic word can remind us that God will carry us through the hard times and see us safely out the other side.

Cautions:

  • If a prophetic word is not encouraging, comforting, or strengthening, you don’t say it. In our next episode (episode 6) we give you great tools for what to do with a prophetic word when what we hear is negative.
  • A prophetic word doesn’t automatically mean it will become true. You need to partner with God to see it realised.
  • Don’t add to what we feel God’s saying when giving prophetic words.

Time Stamps:

[0.38] – Jane talks about what a prophetic word should do from 1 Corinthians 14:3.

[1:50] – Gary unpacks encouraging, strengthening, and comforting.

[3:23] – Gary shares about a time when a prophetic word encouraged him.

[10:03] – Jane shares several significant times when prophetic words were comforting.

[15:46] – Gary emphasizes that an important outcome is that it will bear good fruit.

[15:56] – Just because you receive a prophetic word, it doesn’t mean it will come true.
